Stopping Spiers imperative for Porters Chapel

Randy Wright looked over his Porters Chapel Eagles’ football schedule before the season and started and did some math.
A brutal three-game stretch to open the season that included powerful River Oaks and Prairie View loomed large. Going 0-3, he said, was a possibility. To win one-of-three games would have been successful and to take two of three he would have been giddy.
Now the Eagles prepare for an 0-2 Prairie View team with a chance to go 3-0 after a thrilling last-minute win last week over River Oaks.
“Make no mistake about it, they are 0-2 and in need of a win, so we know they are coming over here to give us their best shot,” said Wright, whose Eagles will kick off against Prairie View at 7 tonight.
One week ago, Porters Chapel held River Oaks to 30 yards of total offense and one first down through three quarters, but wilted in the fourth. River Oaks scored 15 unanswered points and left the Eagles with 1 minute, 40 seconds left on the clock and no timeouts.
PCA drove the field and capped the comeback with a Jason Greer field goal to give PCA a 17-15 victory.
Tonight they’ll get a look at the best running back in the Mississippi Private Schools Association when Jonathan Spiers, the leading rusher in the private schools association last year, brings an 0-2 team into Vicksburg. The Spartans are 0-2, having lost to Briarfield in the season opener and Southern Baptist Education Center of Memphis last Friday.
“He was the leading rusher in the MPSA a season ago and probably will be again this year,” Wright said. “He is the real deal. He reminds me a lot of the guys we had to face in 2006 with (Justin) Couvillion of Central Private, Price Sessums of Brookhaven and Stevan Ridley of Trinity. He is that caliber of a back and we need to figure out a way to slow him down.”
Wright said the 0-2 record is not indicative of the team his Eagles will face tonight.
“They are probably the best team we will face all year,” said Wright, whose team lost to Prairie View 34-7 a season ago. “Last year they physically whipped us up and down the field.”
Quarterback Clayton Holmes and running back Josh Perry lead the Eagles’ offense and PCA enters the game healthy, Wright said. Sophomore lineman Caze Brewer injured his shoulder during the first game, but is expected to play tonight.
