Robert Joseph Alvarado Sr.
Robert Joseph Alvarado Sr. died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 95.
Born in Amapala, Spanish Honduras, Mr. Alvarado with his family came to the United States when he was 7 years old and spent his formative years in New Orleans, where he attended Warren Easton High School and Tulane University.
Being formally trained on the piano, his talent served him well when, as a result of the Depression, his college attendance was curtailed and he started his musical career playing with various bands in the New Orleans French Quarter. As a naturalized citizen, he later toured the country with the Dick Mackey and Herb Littfield orchestras before joining the Herbie Holms Band from Yazoo City as pianist and music composer. It was during his tenure with this organization that he met and married his wife of 64 years, Marian Crowley of Vicksburg.
After settling in Vicksburg, Mr. Alvarado played with the Curt Barfield and Charlie Castleberry bands, then, for the next 27 years, he worked for the Corps of Engineers at the Waterways Experiment Station.
Mr. Alvarado was an avid golfer at the Vicksburg Country Club, where he won a number of championships in his flight. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a communicant of St. Paul Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Juana and Jaquin Alvarado of New Orleans; his wife, Marian Alvarado of Vicksburg; four brothers, Jaquin of Philadelphia, Pa., and Fernando, George and Julio, all of New Orleans.
He is survived by a son, Robert Alvarado Jr. of Vicksburg; three grandchildren, Lynn Foley of Vicksburg, Robert Alvarado III of San Diego, Calif., and Tony Alvarado of Anchorage, Alaska; great-grandchildren, Ashley Foley, Michael Foley and Matthew Foley, all of Vicksburg, Robert Alvarado IV of San Diego, and Elizabeth Alvarado and Olivia Alvarado, both of Anchorage; and a niece, Montie Mouton of New Orleans.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Patrick Farrell, pastor, officiating, Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday at Riles Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and Friday at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of the service.
Pallbearers will be Brian and Paul Pierce, Joe Durst, Stephen Marcus, Warren Doiron, Johnny Nassour, Mike Foley and Whitney Doiron.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church.
Dellora Maxwell Bosley
Services for Dellora “Faye” Maxwell Bosley will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Green M.B. Church with the Rev. Byron Maxwell officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home and Friday at the church from noon until the service.
Mrs. Bosley died Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 89.
Mrs. Bosley was a retired beautician and a member of Pleasant Green M.B. Church. She was a longtime resident of Vicksburg.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Melba Jean Bosley Powell; her father, David A. Maxwell; her mother, Beulah Virginia Davis Maxwell; and three sisters, Thelma Warren, Maxine M. Bunch and Dorothy Boose.
She is survived by her husband, James L. Bosley of Vicksburg; a son, James M. “Jimmy” Bosley of Burke, Va.; four brothers, Donald Maxwell, Dale K. Maxwell of Vicksburg, Richard A. Maxwell of Clarksdale and Milton A. Maxwell of Carbondale, Ill.; and three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Robert Lee Davis Jr.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Robert Lee “Mane” Davis Jr. died in Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at his home. He was 69.
Mr. Davis was born in Lorman. He attended Liddell Elementary School and was a former member of Morning Star M.B. Church in Lorman. He was employed as a truck driver for the City of Milwaukee for more than 30 years. He was a member of Unity Gospel House of Prayer in Milwaukee.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Davis Sr.; one sister, Geraldine Davis; and one brother, Cornelius Davis Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Davis; a daughter, LaToya Davis; four sons, Rodney A. Taylor, Donnell-Brice-Davis, Jesse Williams and DeAngelo Williams, all of Milwaukee.; his mother, Alice Reed-Davis of Milwaukee; three sisters, Ernestine Woods, Al’lean Davis and Mary A. Davis, all of Milwaukee; three brothers, John Davis and Charles Davis, both of Milwaukee, and Michael Davis of Chicago; two grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday at Unity Gospel House of Prayer. Burial followed at Graceland Cemetery under the direction of Leon L. Willliamson Funeral Home, 2157 N. 12th St., Milwaukee, WI 53205.
Georgia Thomas Dent
Georgia Thomas Dent died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 71.
Mrs. Dent retired from Mississippi Action for Progress-Head Start. She was a member of Jackson Street M.B. Church and The Links Inc. She was a founding member and first president of the Vicksburg Homecoming Benevolent Club. She was serving as vice president of Elite Civic Club and was former president of Paramount Civic and Social Club. She was also a Vicksburg Family Development service board member.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Annie Belle Knox Brown; and her father, McKinley Thomas.
Survivors include two sons, Belton Dent Jr. of Vicksburg and Kevin C. Dent of Jackson; two daughters, Yolanda Dent of The Woodlands, Texas, and Michele Dent Thomas of Vicksburg; three grandchildren; and friends and other relatives, including the Knox, Thomas and Funches families.
Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Tessie Day Pierce
Tessie Day Pierce died peacefully at home in her sleep on Feb. 26, 2008. She was 94 years old.
The wife of the deceased Dr. Ludwell Cowan Pierce, she is survived by her three children, Merrie Osborn of Vicksburg, Alice Thomas of Covington, La., and Lud Jr. of Picayune; three grandchildren, Russell Thomas of Boulder, Colo., Amanda Thomas of Covington and Andrew Pierce of Picayune; her son-in-law, David Thomas of Covington; and daughter-in-law, Bettye Pierce of Picayune.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, with the services following at 11. Both will be held in the chapel at First Presbyterian Church, 1390 N. State St. in Jackson. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg.
Tessie was a teacher and homemaker who will be remembered by her children and grandchildren as a devoted wife and a loving, firm and yet gentle mother and grandmother who taught them to love God and family deeply, to always be thankful and to reach out and help others. Her friends will remember her as an inspiration for gracefully accepting her physical handicaps and as one who had a deep and abiding love for her Lord and Savior.
Beatrice Strong
UTICA — Beatrice Strong died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson. She was 89.
Mrs. Strong was a native of Utica. A retired school teacher, she taught for more than 50 years at Satartia, Jeff Davis, Culkin and Rebul Academy. She graduated from Mississippi College for Women and Mississippi College, where she received a master’s degree in elementary education. She was a member of Bear Creek Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Strong; her parents, Guice and Beulah S. Ford Strong; four sisters, Mary Nowell, Dorothy Burkhardt, Emily Strong and Bulah Strong; and two brothers, Guice Strong and James Strong.
She is survived by two sons, Clyde Strong and Mark L. Strong, both of Utica; one brother, William Strong of Laurel; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Chapel in Utica with the Rev. Ben James officiating. Burial will follow at Greer Cemetery in Carlisle.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Joe Strong, Gary Strong, Jay Williams, Allen Fisher, Frankie Coutch and James Strong.
Honorary pallbearers will be Hamp Hutchins, Clyde Fisher and Clyde Skelton.
