Vicksburg High’s boys soccer team picked up a much needed win Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium, beating Callaway 3-0.

The win keeps alive the Gators’ hopes of a Class 4A playoff bid.

“We played better tonight and we accomplished our goal in getting a win,” VHS coach Jason Bennett said. “We have to win these next three games in order to go to the playoffs.”

Just three years ago, the Gators advanced to the Class 5A championship game at Millsaps College against Clinton. The transition to 4A has been tough and the team has struggled to score. The Callaway win moves Vicksburg to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in the division.

Patrick Parker scored two unassisted goals to lead the Gators. Caleb White scored the other goal off an assist from Perry Tolliver. Bowen Woodson got the shutout in the net.

The Vicksburg girls had an easy time with Callaway.

Daria Lawrence scored on a long throw-in — a rare feat in soccer — to lead the Missy Gators’ charge. Chanci Conerly and Tabitha Hayden each scored two goals, while Carley East, Kathy Allen, Amelia Hyde, Melanie McCaskill, Raven Lawrence and Allison East each tallied one goal.

Daria Lawrence also had three assists, while McCaskill, Hyde, Conerly, Raven Lawrence, Allen and Amber Dissoe-Lynn all had one assist.

The Missy Gators are scheduled to host Ridgeland on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
