Nevada Barr event Tuesday at SCHC
An Evening with Nevada Barr, an event first announced in March, will be Tuesday night at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center.
The lecture and book-signing by the New York Times best-selling author will be at 7 p.m. Members of the SCHC will be admitted free but must make reservations. Nonmembers may either become members or make a donation to the event. Without a reservation, admission is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Theatre Guild tells plans for auditions
Auditions for the Vicksburg Theatre Guild’s production of “Faith County” will be from 2 until 4 this afternoon at Parkside Playhouse on Iowa Boulevard.
The play is the prequel to “An Evening of Culture” and tells of competition at the county fair. The cast requires three men and six women, all playing characters in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

Theatre Guild tells summer ‘Gold’ plans
Summer performances for “Gold in the Hills,” the world’s longest-running melodrama, will be at 7:30 each Friday and Saturday night through July 26.
In its 73rd season, “Gold” remains in the Guinness Book of World Records for its longevity.

Jackson library to host Java N’ Jazz session
Java N’ Jazz, an event featuring coffee and entertainment by local poets and musicians, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Eudora Welty Library in Jackson. The event is free.

Cook-off, art, auction part of fundraiser
The fifth annual Star Shine Scholarship fundraiser is set for Aug. 8-9 at the Mississippi State University Raspet Flight Research Center in Starkville.
Events will include a Southern cook-off at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 8, cooking classes at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 9 and a five-course dinner at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9. Other activities will include an online silent auction.
Tickets are $50 for the cook-off, $75 for the cooking classes and $100 per person or $175 per couple for the dinner. All proceeds will go to the Scholarship Fund of the Starkville Area Arts Council. Space is limited, and reservations are required.
