CLINTON — The one missing component for Warren Central’s girls basketball team over the past six years has been the lack of a dominant post player.
On Tuesday night, the Lady Vikes got a close look at one of the best around.
Georgia Tech-bound Sasha Goodlett, a 6-foot, 4-inch senior, scored 15 points and provided all types of matchup problems as the Clinton Lady Arrows defeated Warren Central 57-52.
“Sasha is just humongous down low,” said WC’s Bailey Anderton, a 5-foot, 11-inch sophomore suffering from a cold exasperated by asthma, and who split time with Brittany Erves in trying to guard Goodlett. “We were supposed to front her and have a lot of help-side defense. We had three people on her at all times, but apparently no one can stop her.”
Goodlett scored nine points in the first quarter, then was held scoreless throughout the second and third quarters. Warren Central (15-10) collapsed more players on her and that opened the door for sophomore Ericka Robinson, who had a game-high 25 points.
Robinson connected on 10 of 13 shots and had three 3-pointers. Her 16 first-half points staked Clinton (20-5) to a 39-24 halftime lead. Clinton made 17 of 25 shots from the field in the first half.
“We shot the ball really well in the first half, but in the second half when they switched defenses on us, it slowed us up a bit,” Clinton coach Felicia Lofton said. “We just found it hard to score at times in the second half.”
Warren Central coach Donny Fuller made two adjustments at halftime, changing “our offense and defense,” for the second half. The half-court defense stymied Clinton and WC standout junior Sha’Kayla Caples, who averages nearly 27 points per game but had only four at halftime, got untracked.
Despite constantly being shadowed by as many as three Lady Arrows, she scored eight third-quarter points and WC sliced a 15-point deficit to seven at 47-40 going into the fourth quarter.
“We had to do that because Caples is such a great athlete you can’t stop her one-on-one,” Lofton said. “We always had someone ready to help. Even so, she made some unbelievable shots.”
Caples scored 10 of the team’s 12 points in the fourth quarter and WC got the deficit down to as few as three at 55-52 with 13.6 seconds to play on Caples’ 22nd and final points. Twelve seconds later, Robinson connected on two free throws to secure the victory.
Karnina Bunch scored 14 points, including three 3-pointers, in the loss. Erves scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting. Caples grabbed 12 rebounds and had three blocks.
Goodlett snagged 13 rebounds and blocked five shots.
