Warren Central pitcher Andi Hearn tossed a gem Thursday. The line for Greenville-Weston’s pitchers looked more like a cubic zirconia.
Hearn threw a five-inning no-hitter, walking two batters and striking out seven, and Warren Central drew 14 walks to cruise to a 10-0 victory over Greenville. Hearn faced one batter over the minimum, as catcher Mandy Fuller threw out two runners on stolen base attempts.
The win all but assures the Lady Vikes (12-9, 1-1 Division 3-5A) of a spot in the Class 5A playoffs. They need to beat Clinton next Thursday, or Greenville (0-3, 0-3) on April 8, to clinch a berth. Greenville must beat WC by more than 10 runs to stay alive, however.
“Any time you win a district game it’s a big win. You never want to lose, but you especially don’t want to lose your district games,” WC coach Dana McGivney said.
WC only had two hits in the game, mainly because Greenville’s pitchers couldn’t throw a strike.
Carmen Gibson walked the first six batters of the third inning to force in two runs. She was relieved by Camissa Jackson, who walked three of the first five batters she faced. In all, the Lady Vikes waited out nine walks and scored five runs in the inning to take a 7-0 lead. The only balls put in play were a sacrifice fly by Bridget Dillon and an inning-ending pop-up by Hearn.
The free passes kept coming in the fourth inning as Jackson walked the first three batters to load the bases. One run scored on a wild pitch, and two came across on a sacrifice fly by Anna Griffin and an infield single by Anna Jones as WC went ahead 10-0.
WC’s only other hit came on a leadoff triple by Shawn Johnson in the second inning.
