Three charged in attempt to cash tax check|[07/10/08]

Three Port Gibson women were arrested Wednesday after attempting to fraudulently cash a federal income tax return check at a Vicksburg bank, police said.

Victennia Claiborne Turner, 24, 353 Old 18 Highway Apt. 1; Latanya Tywone Shorter, 18, and Sandra Shorter Harris, 40, both of 905 Evan Doss Lane; were picked up at the BancorpSouth branch at 820 South St.

Police had responded to the bank at 2:29 p.m. after a call about a suspicious tax return check, Vicksburg Police criminal intelligence analyst Suzan Ebeling said. The check was not made out to any of the three women.

All three were arrested in the bank parking lot. Turner was charged with attempted uttering a forgery, while Shorter and Harris were both charged with conspiracy to commit forgery. Each had her bond set at $5,000 and remained in the Warren County Jail this morning.

Air conditioner stolen on Dabney Street

A central air-conditioning unit was reported stolen from a home on Dabney Street Wednesday, Vicksburg Police said.

The unit missing from a vacant home in the 700 block of the street was valued at $2,000. Police received the report at 5:56 p.m.
