U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker declared himself a friend to firefighters and first responders during a brief campaign stop Friday in Vicksburg.
Addressing a smattering of attendees at the 71st annual Mississippi Fire Chiefs and Firefighters Convention at Vicksburg Convention Center, Wicker said grants for the state fire academy are instrumental in shoring up local fire protection and educating the public.
“Fire chiefs and firefighters look to the federal government as a teammate of theirs,” Wicker said. “You know the issues involving what you need in your local agencies better than almost anyone inside the Beltway. We need more people in Washington who understand that.”
Among other points mentioned in the seven-minute speech was support for first responders, as Wicker quoted a speech by President Bush made in 2007 at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, then extended his appreciation toward the profession.
“You surely didn’t do it to get to be a millionaire. If you wanted to make money, you’d have done something else,” Wicker said. “I appreciate your willingness to work and do the things you do when undoubtedly there could be more lucrative professions for you.”
Wicker, 56, represented north Mississippi-based District 1 in the U.S. House of Representatives for almost 13 years before his Dec. 31, 2007, appointment by Gov. Haley Barbour to succeed retiring Trent Lott in the U.S. Senate. He is opposed by former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove in the November special election.
Accompanied by a small group of staff, including his son, McDaniel, the Pontotoc native said he enjoys the chance to serve in the Senate
