Bennie Smith Jr.

PORT GIBSON – Services for Bennie Smith Jr. will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Campbell Chapel Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. James Jones officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel and from noon until the service Monday at the church.

Mr. Smith died Monday, July 21, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 88.

Mr. Smith was a member and usher at Campbell Chapel Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie Smith Sr. and Mintie January-Smith; five brothers, Wilbert Smith, Leonard Smith Sr., Joseph Smith Sr., Dave Smith and James Smith Sr.; and two sisters, Leola Lucas and Mary Ella Robinson.

Survivors include six sons, Henry Smith of Dade City, Fla., Leroy Smith, Trenton Johnson and Ferdale Johnson, all of Port Gibson, Donnell Smith of Utica and Freddie Smith of Vicksburg; three daughters, Laverne S. Rucker of Port Gibson, Mary S. Rayford of Lorman and Sheila Smith of Atlanta; 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and other relatives and friends, including Barbara Johnson.
