A 21-year-old Vicksburg man who played basketball at Jackson Street Community Center nearly every day died Saturday after collapsing during a pickup game.

Michael Watson, 225 1/2 Rhodes Drive, was pronounced dead soon after arriving at River Region Medical Center, Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said. The emergency call to 911 had been made at 1:30 p.m.

“It appears to have been something heart-related,” Huskey said. “Might have been some kind of cardiac arrest, but right now we don’t know for sure.”

He said an autopsy would be performed in Jackson, probably late today.

Huskey added that no foreign substances were suspected to be involved.

Watson’s father, Joseph Watson, said his son had never experienced any kind of heart-related health problems.

Michael Watson was a 2004 graduate of Vicksburg High School and worked as a clerk for Rainbow Casino. Joseph Watson said his son also was interested in music and playing pool.

He said his son and a group of friends played ball at the center most days.

“He would have gone twice a day if he could,” Watson said.

The body was to be returned to Williams Funeral Service.
