Vicksburg High tennis coach Kevin Manton paired up sisters Catherine and Christine Figueroa as a doubles team to give them a shot at a state championship.

The plan worked, right up until the end.

The Figueroa sisters won their first two matches at the Class 4A state tournament on Thursday at Ridgeland Tennis Center without dropping a set, but lost in the championship match to Oxford’s Meg Swindoll and Chelsea Tidwell 6-1, 6-1.

Swindoll and Tidwell only lost six games en route to the title.

The Figueroas advanced to the championship match by beating West Lauderdale’s Ashley Massey and Donna Petrovic 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, and Laurel’s Hannah Burson and Alexa Owens 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals.

The other Gators who advanced to the state tournament didn’t fare as well. Reed Rodgers and Perry Tolliver lost to Gautier’s Eric Lynn and Jeremy Smith in the first round of the No. 2 boys doubles tournament, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. In the mixed doubles tournament, Oxford’s Jenner Jordan and Mary Barksdale beat Donald Brown and Grace Ga-as 6-2, 6-1.

Jordan and Barksdale went on to win the state title, beating Christian Buskirk and Jacob Rowland of New Albany 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.

In the Class 1A tournament, St. Aloysius’ Scott McCaa and Jeremy Falls advanced to the No. 2 boys doubles championship before losing to Tyler Key and Clay Curry of Greenville-St. Joe 6-1, 6-2.

In the Class 5A tournament, Clint Key and Hailee Melton of Clinton defeated Warren Central’s Clay Koestler and Shelby Claire Liddell 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round of the mixed doubles competition.
