For one night, Warren Central played like a complete team battering Clinton 16-6 in six innings in a key Division 4-5A game Friday night at Viking Field.

The Vikings (5-12, 3-1) move into a tie in the loss column with the Arrows (13-8, 5-1), but are still a full game behind for the divisional lead. The two teams will meet for a possible division title-deciding game on April 7 in Clinton.

WC coach Randy Broome isn’t thinking that far ahead, however.

“We’re done with the Clinton saga for right now. We still have some other business in the division. We’ve got three games with Greenville and another one with Provine. And before we can worry about that, we’ve got Madison Central and Louisville coming in here (today).”

The Vikings host the Class 5A runner-up today at noon and then will face Louisville, a Class 4A playoff contender at 6.

Broome hopes his team can bring the bats they broke out against Clinton. The Vikings pounded out 14 hits and made use of six Clinton errors.

“We found it tonight. We just got to bring that same type of effort to every game we play here on out,” Broome said.

Viking right fielder Dustin Hardin keyed the Viking offense with three extra base hits. After a third inning double, Hardin hit the center field wall in his last two at bats. The first went for an inside-the-park home run and the latter was good for a triple that started a game ending six-run, sixth inning.

“I just couldn’t get all of it to get them out of the park,” Hardin said of his wall bangers. Luckily, he can run. He was able to speed around the bases to complete the inside-the-park dinger and then rolled in his with his triple to give him nine total bases in the game.

“Coach was just waving me in on the home run and I kept going. I saw it go off the wall. I hope this gives us a boost,” Hardin said.

The home run put the Vikings up 10-1 after four innings. WC had knocked out Clinton starter Jeff Tingle in two innings with five runs on six hits.

The Arrows, though, made a comeback in the fifth, getting five runs. The first two came off WC starter Keaton Sanders after Josh Clarke singled and Tingle doubled him in. Tingle came in on a wild pitch to make it 10-3. After a dropped fly ball in deep center, Broome pulled Sanders with two out and brought in Adam Lee.

Lee couldn’t throw a strike. He hit two batters and walked two more to force in three more runs to make it 10-6. He finally got Brooks Edwards to fly out to right to end the inning.

Lee came back to pitch a 1-2-3 sixth inning to keep the score at 10-6.

The Vikings ended it in the bottom of the sixth as Clinton made two straight infield errors to chase in the final four runs.

Heath Carroll also had three hits and scored three runs for the Vikings. Lee drove in three off two hits in the first two innings. Jimmie Elliott had a triple and RBI single while Cody Barfield had two hits and scored three runs.

PCA 11, Riverfield 10

Chris May has his best day as an Porters Chapel baseball player on Friday night.

The senior came on in the third inning after Riverfield grabbed a 10-0 lead and shut the door the rest of the way, then helped lead a comeback in the final innings.

May hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 10, then Austin Barber completed the comeback with an RBI single as the Eagles improved to 10-7.

Matt Cranfield started the comeback in the fourth inning with a three-run home run to make the score 10-3 and the Eagles chipped away over the four final innings.

Porters Chapel is scheduled to play at University Christian today at 4 in Brandon.
