Venom, Titans on opposite ends of rallies|[07/27/08]

The Vicksburg Venom and Vicksburg Titans were both a part of late comebacks Saturday, but with vastly different results.
The Venom overcame a five-run deficit in the fourth inning to beat the Delta Black Sox 7-6 and earn a No. 3 seed in the championship round of the 10-year-olds’ Governor’s Cup.
The Titans, meanwhile, saw a one-run lead slip away in the last inning and fell to the Ouachita Storm 6-5 in their final game of pool play. That loss sent the Titans into an elimination game later Saturday night, where they lost to the Louisiana Lightning 9-2.
“The kids played their hearts out in that game. They really fought in every inning,” Titans coach Randy Hale said after the loss to Ouachita.
It was part of a long, hot, frustrating day for the Titans. They lost their opener against the Black Sox, 9-1, and seemed to have the game against Ouachita in control. James Gugert went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, and he scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Jake Watson to give Vicksburg a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth. Jeremy Williams pitched a scoreless bottom of the fourth for the Titans, but they couldn’t hold the lead in the fifth.
Ouachita loaded the bases on three straight walks and tied the game on an RBI groundout by Jared Blake. The grounder back to the mound seemed exactly what the Titans wanted, until it kicked off the mound and hopped over the glove of pitcher Mason Todd. The only play for shortstop Nate Hearn was at first.
“It just took a little bad hop. It was a tough one,” Hale said.
The next batter, Cole Smith, then laced a single to right-center to bring in the winning run. The 1 hour, 25 minute time limit had expired in the top of the inning.
Caleb Dickerson went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Titans. Cole Trichel had an RBI single for Ouachita, which overcame a pair of two-run deficits and never led until the winning run crossed the plate.
“We played behind the whole game,” Ouachita coach Robert Mitcham said. “You never want to play behind, but if you’re going to do it it’s better to do it when you’re the home team.”
The Venom got to see the brighter side of a walk-off hit in their win over the Black Sox.
After handling the Byram Blitz, 9-4, in their opener, the Venom fell behind the Black Sox 5-0 in the third inning. After throwing three Delta runners out at the plate in the top of the inning, the Venom started their comeback.
Three straight walks loaded the bases for Dale Griffith, who followed with a grand slam to cut it to 5-4. Vicksburg added two more runs to take a 6-5 lead, then gave up an unearned run in the fourth on a throwing error. In the bottom of the fourth, however, Brooks Boolos led off with a double and scored on a single by Griffith to win it.
Griffith went 2-for-3 in the game, with five RBIs.
“I think their ace pitcher ran out of innings. They brought in another pitcher and we were able to hit him, and that got us going,” Venom coach Todd Boolos said.
The win improved the Venom to 2-0 in pool play, gave them the No. 3 seed in the championship round, and kept them from having to play a third game on Saturday. They’ll play Fury Baseball today at 1 p.m.
“That’s all you can ask for coming out of pool play, is to be a one, two or three seed. It helps your pitching a lot,” Todd Boolos said.
