Degrees
Casey Dale Younger has graduated from Millsaps College, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in political science with a minor in psychology and a concentration in pre-law. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity and Sigma Delta Psi athletic honorary. A 2004 graduate of Vicksburg High School, he is the son of Carla Marie Jones and Karl Allan Younger.
Vicksburg students who received degrees during spring commencement exercises at the University of Southern Mississippi were Mesgana Yesus Molla Alemu, Brittany Starla Breazeale, John D. Hosemann, Jessica Lashae Lacey, Christy Lynn Lofton, Theodore James McKercher, Harold Houston Steelman, Joseph Scott Fife, Tiffany Chante’ Hubbard, Marquita Janelle Parker, Kimyattia L. Smith, John Thomas Theobald, Dempsey Villanueva, Ava Elizabeth Bliss, Robert Schaffer Douglas and Brittany Claypool Jones.
Vicksburg students who are candidates for degrees from the University of Mississippi are Logan Leigh Chaney, Katherine Pruette Farris, Michael David Weiland, Susan Whittenberg, Cody E. Dickson, Michael Thomas Engle, Candice Julia Torrey, Laura Virginia Hudspeth and William Jeffrey Jernigan.
Honor societies
Jasmine Octavia P. Brown has been selected for membership in Pi Sigma Alpha political science honor society. A freshman at the University of Southern Mississippi, she is a dean’s scholar and a member of Lambda Sigma and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. She was nominated by Omicron Delta Kappa for Outstanding Freshman Female and serves as secretary and on the executive board for the Future Black Law Student Association. She serves as a resident assistant and a member of the African American Student Organization. A political science major, she is the daughter of Patricia S. Brown and Anthony C. Gibson.
Jenny McGuffee of Vicksburg has been inducted into the Pi Xi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau international honor society of nursing at Delta State University.

Gem Panicker, a freshman at Vicksburg High School, participated in the Multicultural International Event at Alcorn State University as an Indian classical snake dance performer. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Girish Panicker of Alcorn State.

His selection was based on his application, which included a detailed description of a science experiment, an essay, a mission patch design and three letters of recommendation.
J. Trevor Hunt, a 2001 graduate of Vicksburg High School, was one of three music students at the University of Southern Mississippi to be accepted into the 2008 Hampden-Sydney Music Festival Artist Fellowship Program in Hampden-Sydney, Va., May 19 – June 1. With the two other students, he submitted a CD and was notified of the classic guitar trio’s acceptance into the program that includes two weeks of chamber music coaching with world-renowned artists and several performance opportunities.
Alcorn State University’s Earth Day 2008 Celebration was attended by more than 200 people, including Mayor Laurence E. Leyens of Vicksburg, who spoke about safeguarding Vicksburg’s environment; Mayor Henry Banks of Hazlehurst, who welcomed participants; and various ASU departmental chairs and instructors. Activities included an environment symposium, visitation of the Millennium Tree, dormitory cleanup and an essay contest, which was won by Brenda Angelethy of Port Gibson Middle School.
Recitals
Sean Daily, Victoria Daily, Victoria Gong, Kaylee Kilgo, Jason Lee, Sallie Lin, Shaun Lin, Lorraine Lin, Valarie Pugh, George Tang, Elizabeth Benson, Kyle Benson and Rhianna Benson, piano students of Judith Allen, were presented in a spring recital Sunday at First Presbyterian Church. Those recognized at the National Federation of Music Clubs District IV-B Festival were Victoria Daily, Victoria Gong (perfect scores), Sallie Lin, Shaun Lin and Lorraine Lin for accumulating one excellent, six superior and three superior-plus ratings. Sallie and Shaun Lin earned loving cups for achieving 15 points, and Lorraine Lin earned two large cups for six years of consecutive superiors in performance and theory. Those recognized for five superiors and one excellent at the Bach Festival were Jason Lee, Sallie Lin, Lorraine Lin, Elizabeth Benson, Kyle Benson and Rhianna Benson. Rhianna received an additional superior, and Elizabeth earned a blue ribbon and superior-plus. Those attending the area pre-college auditions for Mississippi Music Teachers Association, where they received 17 superiors and one excellent, were Elizabeth Benson, Kyle Benson, Rhianna Benson, Kaylee Kilgo, Lorraine Lin, Sallie Lin and Shaun Lin. Elizabeth Benson and Rhianna Benson were honored at the statewide competitive recital in Meridian for achieving the highest composite scores for their grade level. In competitive performance, Rhianna won an honorable mention, Elizabeth won a red ribbon and Kyle won a first-place medal. They, along with Sallie and Lorraine Lin, received honor roll certificates.
Scholarships
William Jefferson Armstrong of Vicksburg received the Juliette Burnette Memorial Scholarship at the Mississippi College Honors Day Convocation in Clinton. The monetary award is given annually to a student majoring in the area of church music.
