Herbert E. Brooks
Herbert E. Brooks died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at his home in Warren County. He was 75.
Mr. Brooks was born in Anguilla to Tracy Watkins and Walter Peyton Brooks. He was a retired farmer and a veteran of World War II, serving in the Air Force. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Brooks of Vicksburg; one daughter, Sally Brooks of Louise; one son, Michael Brooks of Vicksburg; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cypress Gardens Cemetery in Yazoo City with the Rev. Glen Warrington officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home of Yazoo City.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday from 1:30 until the service.
Pallbearers will be Josh Murray, Brad Harris, Ron Hall, Ed Harris, Wix Crawford and Buster Jennings.
Joel Grigsby
HERMANVILLE — Joel Grigsby died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at his home in Hermanville. He was 60.
Mr. Grigsby was a member of Freedman Hall M.B. Church in Hermanville. He worked at Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years and served as District 4 supervisor for four years. He had also worked for the Port Gibson Police Department and in security at Hinds Community College, Alcorn State University, Rainbow Casino and for L.P. Johnson Security Services.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian Grigsby; his mother, Nancy Grigsby of Hermanville; two sons, Derrick Jones of Port Gibson and JoDarius Grigsby of Hermanville; two daughters, Nikiya Grigsby of Pattison and Kimberly Johnson of Milwaukee, Wis.; nine brothers, Samuel Grigsby, Robert Grigsby, Eugene Grigsby, Andrew Grigsby and Norman Grigsby, all of Hermanville, Henry Grigsby of Utica, Jimmie Grigsby of Lorman, Charles Grigsby of Marrero, La., and T.J. Grigsby of Arcola, Texas; three sisters, Jamie O’Neal, Emma Bell and Nora Turner, all of Hermanville; two grandchildren; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Port Gibson High School gymnasium with the Rev. H.E. Banks officiating. Burial will follow at Freedman Hall M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 until 6 today at Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson and Saturday at the gymnasium from 10 a.m. until the service.
Margaret Haver Roberts
Margaret Haver Roberts died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at St. Dominic Jackson Memorial Hospital. She was 89.
Born and reared in Vicksburg, Mrs. Roberts lived a number of years in Jackson and Greenwood. She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal church, serving on the Pastoral Care committee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Coley Roberts; her parents, Walter and Mary Haver; and four brothers, Eugene Howard, Harold Haver, Mitchell Haver and Edgar Haver.
Survivors include one son, Bill Haver Roberts of Sandston, Va.; one daughter, Mary Walters Ferreri of Gulf Shores, Ala.; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Charlie Deaton officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until the service.
Ralph K. Severe
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Ralph K. Severe, 70, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008.
Born in Deadwood, S.D., he was the son of the late Ralph James and Patricia Muirhead Severe of Vicksburg. A resident of Vicksburg until 1972, he graduated from Carr Central High School.
Mr. Severe was an automobile technician at Sonic Automotive-Capitol Hyundai.
Graveside services will be Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Southland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Severe; three sons, George K. (Amy) Severe of Allen, Texas, Ralph J. Severe of Dallas, Texas and Randall K. (Surrina) Severe of Irmo; two daughters, Kristin S. Ward and Ashley S. Sanders (Steve) of West Columbia; and grandchildren, Leah Severe of Allen, Texas, Aaron and Courtney Ward of Columbia and Andy and Mary Sullivan of Irmo.
Bill Stevens
ANGUILLA — Bill Stevens died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at King’s Daughters Hospital in Yazoo City. He was 82.
A lifelong resident of Anguilla, Mr. Stevens was a retired farmer. He was a veteran of the Marines, serving in World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Stevens in 1985; and his parents, Douglas and Margie Stevens.
He is survived by two daughters, Jan Ward and Brenda Stevens, both of Anguilla; one brother, Aline Stevens of Carbondale, Ill.; two grandchildren, Pennye Ward of Anguilla and Boo Ward of Bentonia; and two great-grandchildren, Kade Norman of Anguilla and Garin Ward of Bentonia.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork with the Rev. Glen Warrington officiating. Burial will follow at Golden Link Cemetery in Anguilla.
Pallbearers will be Gene Hodnett, Bobby Stevens, Russell Stewart, David Johnson, Roy Johnson and Lenn Dickerson.
Hilda Lee Williams White
Hilda Lee Williams White was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Belzoni. She died Jan. 2, 2008, at Perry County General in Richton.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fisher Funeral Home, conducted by Reggie Crawford and grandson, Jonathan Henderson White.
Hilda worked a number of years for J.C. Penney in Vicksburg, then as a bookkeeper for Union Compress. A history buff, she spent her latter working years as a tour guide of antebellum homes and the Vicksburg National Military Park. She was a member of the Church of Christ, attending in Vicksburg, Central in Lufkin, Texas, and Leakesville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; brothers, George Williams and David Turner Williams; and sisters, Rebecca Biedenharn and Betty Sue Wilkerson.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Eva Gwen and Ronald Byrd of Richton; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Russell and Patricia “Trish” White of Pollok, Texas; grandchildren, Thomas Paul White, Tom Byrd, Lesha Lott, Jonathan Henderson White and Holly Eileen White; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Nancy Mumper of Jackson and Frances Williams of Vicksburg; and brothers, James Williams of Brandon and John H. Williams of New York City. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Tom Byrd, Keith Lott, Clay Koestler, Walter “Buster” Miller, Odie Hartley and Richard Wilkerson. Honorary pallbearers will be David Williams and Stacy McKnight.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, with services at 3 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Home in Vicksburg and interment following at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sunnybrook Children’s Home in Jackson.
