Cartoonist to lecture at cultural center

The Art of the Cartoonist, a lecture by Marshall Ramsey, editorial cartoonist for The Clarion-Ledger, will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center. A book-signing will follow.

Ramsey, a two-time Pulitzer finalist, will talk about his favorite cartoons and explain the stories behind them.

Hinds tells plans for concert, exhibit

Hinds Community College has announced two events at its Raymond campus.

At 7 p.m. Sept. 30, a baroque concert will be in Reeves Recital Hall. Guest artist Emily Baker will play on the cello works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Monteverdi.

Through Oct. 3, Limner, an exhibit by artist Christopher Brady, will be displayed at the Marie Hull Gallery in the Denton Art Building.

Admission is free. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon Fridays.

Author, curator to speak about Mississippi quilters

Pieced Together: Mississippi Quilts, a presentation of Jefferson College, will be at noon Wednesday.

Mary Lohrenz, curator of the Governor’s Mansion in Jackson and co-author of “Mississippi Homespun: Nineteenth Century Textiles and the Women Who Made Them,” will speak. Her presentation will highlight the traditions of 19th and 20th century Mississippi quilters. The 27 images she will use in the program are part of the collection of the Museum of Mississippi History, formerly the Old Capitol Museum.

Flora Plant Swap set for Oct. 30

The Flora Fall Plant Swap will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 30 in the Flora Library meeting room.

Participants are asked to bring one or two well-rooted plants to swap and others to share.

To get to the library, travel U.S. 49 to Flora, take the South Flora exit at the Bank of Yazoo, and the library is about a mile on the right. From Mississippi 22, the library is a block off Main Street.

Girls career seminar scheduled at USM

The fifth annual Career Explorations for Girls conference will be at the University of Southern Mississippi on Oct.18.

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and will be co-hosted by USM’s Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies and Forrest General Hospital’s Spirit of Women campaign.

The conference is open to grades seven through 12, and each girl must be accompanied by her mother or an adult woman. Participants do not need to be enrolled in gifted education to attend. Angeline Godwin, president of the Hattiesburg Area Development Partnership, will be the keynote speaker.

Topics include business development, science and technology, health care, communication, education, art, interior design, architecture, psychology, law, music, sports and social work.

Christian artist Patty on USM symphony list

Individual tickets are available for the Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra’s 2008-09 season.

The 88th season will include award-winning Christian singer Sandi Patty, among others.

Wood block prints on display at USM

A Private Collection of Japanese Prints, an exhibit of wood block prints from the collection of Joseph W. Bailey of Hattiesburg, will be on display at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Museum of Art.

The exhibit will run Tuesday through Nov. 1. An opening reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the museum.

Bailey began his collection 25 years ago. He has traveled the world and found dealers that specialized in the woodblock prints in Paris, London and Amsterdam.

Admission is free. The museum is located in the Fine Arts Building at USM and hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
