Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science has scheduled a recruitment meeting in Vicksburg, one of 10 set across the state. The events, each called Super Night, kick off this month and will run through December. Vicksburg’s hourlong session is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library.

Created by the Mississippi Legislature in 1987, MSMS is a public, residential and coeducational high school for gifted and academically talented juniors and seniors. It is governed by the State Board of Education.

MSMS is located on the campus of Mississippi University for Women in Columbus. The atmosphere is similar to that of a college; students attend upper-level courses and live in residence halls.

Currently, two students from Vicksburg attend MSMS, and Julie Muselwhite, the school’s staff assistant for recruitment, said the school wants to draw more people from this area.

During the Super Night sessions, MSMS representatives will discuss the admissions, application and interview process, academic opportunities, residence life, extracurricular activities and how to prepare, academically, for MSMS. In addition to Vicksburg, Super Night locations are Leakesville, Waveland, Oxford, Brookhaven, Newton, Pearl, Kosciusko, Belzoni, and Belmont.
