The largest multi-agency emergency training exercise to take place in Mississippi began in Vicksburg this morning and will continue through Thursday.
More than 24 federal, state and local law enforcement entities and first responders will be participating in continuing drills that simulate various catastrophes, including rescues in water near the U.S. 80 bridge, incidents on rail cars and situations with hazardous materials.
Helicopters and myriad emergency vehicles will be involved in the simulations.
Water training safety exercises will be carried out by the U.S. Coast Guard. The most comprehensive rail car training program done in Mississippi will be administered by Kansas City Southern Railway. Senior officials will participate in a task coordination drill.
Several public venues will host the events, including the bridge and Rainbow Casino.
The exercise is being sponsored by the City of Vicksburg and the Mississippi National Guard’s 47th Civil Support Team.
