Mark Douglas, on the truck bed, operates a crane to lower the Connecticut Monument onto the ground for Jimmy Smith, right, and Danny Porter to maneuver into place Monday at Grant’s Canal, a part of the Vicksburg National Military Park, in Delta. The imported black granite is etched with names of Civil War Union soldiers of the 9th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers and weighs about 5,400 pounds and stands 8 feet 10 inches tall, said Dave Pace, owner of Vicksburg Monument. A public dedication of the monument will be at the site at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 14.
