After seven years, several owners, continued deterioration and missing the wrecking ball at least four times, a Farmer Street house again is scheduled to be razed after a unanimous vote Tuesday by the city’s Board of Architectural Review.

The property at 1012 Farmer St., owned by S&K Mortgage Company of Meridian, is facing demolition, which board members say is “long overdue.”

“No one seems to care about this property,” said Wayne Scott, assistant director of the city’s building and inspections department. “It’s had several owners over the last 20 years, and no one’s bothered to do anything.”

The property, for which the city pays about $400 to cut the grass two to three times a year, has been issued four stays – one each in 2001 and 2002 and two in 2003 – followed by board approval to demolish it on Jan. 27, 2004, said Paula Wright, zoning assistant and historic preservation facilitator for the city.

Before the city could move forward with the demolition, the house was purchased by the current owners in a tax sale, Scott said.

“Whenever there is a new owner, we have to go through the whole process again,” he said.

In addition to the dwindling care of the property, Scott drew the board’s attention to complaints from neighbors. One, he said, has complained several times about erosion on his property from rainwater that runs from 1012 Farmer, causing foundation problems at his home.

No date was given for the demolition.

Scott said this neglected property is one of many in Vicksburg facing the same fate.

“It’s a never-ending cycle,” he said. “It’s a crying shame property owners won’t take care of their property.”

In other business, the board heard again from Larry “LD” Prentiss, owner of LD’s Kitchen, about a walk-in cooler, garbage recepticle and grease trap he would like to place on his property, as well as a fence around the area.

Because Prentiss did not bring architectural renderings, showing the elevation of the proposed fence, height of the cooler and location of the hole in the current structure to connect the cooler, the board voted for him to come back with those specifications.

The board also approved minutes from March 25 ad May 25 meetings.
