A house fire in Hinds County Wednesday afternoon is being investigated for arson and burglary, Chief Melvin Smith of the Bench Volunteer Fire Department in Utica said today.
The blaze at 3424 Cook Road, off Mississippi 27 near Cannada Cross Road, broke out around 4 p.m. Firefighters battled for about two hours, limiting the damage to one end of the house where two bedrooms are located.
The cause of the fire appeared to be arson, Smith said.
“One of the beds was set on fire with some type of flammable liquid,” he said.
The residence was also burglarized, with glass broken out of the back door.
Four people live in the home, said owner Hyka Butler, including her mother and two children, ages 9 and 16.
Due to the fire damage, Butler was not sure if anything had been stolen.
No one was home at the time of the break-in and fire, and no injuries were reported, Smith said.
Units from the Utica and Learned volunteer fire departments also responded.
Investigators from the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department were hoping to go to the scene this afternoon, if the weather permitted on-site investigation, said Capt. Steve Bailey.
