Mary Alice Harris Bell

Services for Mary Alice Harris Bell will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Grove Street M.B. Church with the Rev. Joe Harris Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery. Public visitation will be from noon until 4 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home, with family time from 5 until 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 406 Klein St.

Mrs. Bell passed on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at her home. She was 78.

Born in Waterproof, La., she had been a resident of Vicksburg for 65 years. Mrs. Bell was once employed with Mutual Credit Union and Gibson Memorial Methodist Church. She served as a faithful choir member, and later served as a mother on the Mother’s Board.

Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe (Martha Kennedy) Harris Sr.; a daughter, Tommie Jean Bell; two brothers, Joe Paul Harris and Roosevelt Harris; a sister, Bessie Mae Gray; and one great-grandchild, Dexter Harris.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Leonard Bell Jr. of Vicksburg; eight sons, James Harris, Roy Anthony Bell, Michael David Bell, Leonard Bell III and Joseph Paul Bell, all of Vicksburg, Benjamin Harris and Charles Henry Bell, both of Clarksville, Tenn., and Gregory Joseph Bell of Shreveport, La.; seven daughters, Joann McCullum, Mary Elizabeth Reed, Patricia Ann Bell Goodman, Dorothy Lynn Naylor, Rosie Bell James, and Minnie Beatrice Wilson, all of Vicksburg, and Lillie Bell Brown of Albion, Mich.; an adopted granddaughter, Langell “Tangie” McCullum Williams; one dear aunt, Camille Harris Cox; three brothers, Henry Harris of Ducansville, Texas, Sullivan Harris of New Orleans and Joe Harris Sr. of Compton, Calif.; one sister, Dorothy Ann Harris Taylor of Tyler, Texas; one goddaughter, Rose Ray Smith; 57 grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other family members, including the Kennedy, Cox, Harris, Myles and Williams families.

Rhody Campbell Dolly

Rhody Campbell Dolly died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 98.

Mrs. Dolly was a member of Travis Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she was part of the usher and stewardess boards. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Limus and Sally Kemper Campbell; one daughter, Bessie Lee Thomas; one son, William Dolly; two sisters, Melvina Bryant and Willie Mae Cato; and her husband.

Survivors include three sons, John Wesley Dolly of West Palm Beach, Fla., Joseph D. Campbell of Memphis and George Thomas of Valley, Ala.; two sisters, Mary Head of Vicksburg and Lubertha Harris of Milwaukee; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John Wesley “JW” Holden Sr.

Services for John Wesley “JW” Holden Sr. will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bingham Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Rohelia Cemetery in Hinds County. Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home with family present from 6 until 7.

Mr. Holden died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 77.

Mr. Holden was born in Hinds County in the Cayuga community. He lived most of his life in Vicksburg and, in his later years, lived in Muskegon, Mich. He was a retired farm-equipment operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Beatrice Eatmon Holden; four brothers, Frank Stewart, Leonard Stewart, Prentiss Lyons and Sam Neal Sr.; and five sisters, Joanna Holden, Lenora McGriggs, Rosie Lee Lindsey, Mary Bradford and Lucy Holden Bingham.

He is survived by his wife, Ida Lee Holden of Vicksburg; four sons, Roland Holden and Leon Holden, both of Oakland, Calif., John Wesley Holden Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., and Henry James Holden of Hamburg, Germany; four daughters, Ida Mae Russell and Gladys Smith, both of Vicksburg, Classie Holden of Las Vegas and Katie Smith of Columbia, Mo.; one brother, Willie Holden of Muskegon; a sister, Annie Bell White of Vicksburg; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives, including members of the Taylor, Eatmon, Hill, McGriggs, Stimage and Lyons families.

Beatrice Culbert Mayfield

Beatrice Culbert “Bea” Mayfield died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 79.

A homemaker, Mrs. Mayfield was a member the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Mayfield; three sons, Ernest Mayfield, Eddie Mayfield Sr. and David Mayfield Sr.; one brother, Mack Culbert Jr.; two sisters, Alma Alexander and Tommie Ray; and her parents, Mack Culbert Sr. and Mollie Windham Riptoe.

She is survived by two sons, Karl Mayfield Sr. of Fontana, Calif., and Lovies Mayfield of Vicksburg; five daughters, Willie Jean Tucker, Terri Mayfield and Lela Mayfield, all of Vicksburg, Bobbie Jean Cooper of San Fernando, Calif., and Sandra Bingham of North Ridge, Calif.; five sisters, Maxcille Johnson, Camille Fleet and Juanita Culbert, all of Baton Rouge, Eunice Maxwell of Vicksburg and Jean Gaskin of Hampton, Va.; 27 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Nettie Mae Olson

TALLULAH – Nettie Mae Olson died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at Town and Country Rehab Center in Minden, La. She was 92.

Born in Covington, La., Mrs. Olson had lived in Madison Parish most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Tallulah.

She is survived by nieces, including Louise Dukes; nephews; and friends.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah with the Rev. Don Thornton officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.
