CRIME * From staff reports
A juvenile burglary suspect was shot by a Claiborne County sheriff’s deputy Sunday afternoon at a Pattison apartment complex in a building that was destroyed by fire Monday night, Claiborne County Sheriff Frank Davis said.
At about 1:45 Sunday, deputies responded to the Pattison Apartments on Elizabeth Street for a complaint of burglary. While on scene, one of the deputies, whom Davis declined to identify, shot a 17-year-old boy who fell from the ceiling of one of the apartments and was believed to be the burglar, Davis said.
Davis would not say if the teen was armed.
He said the teen was shot in the chest and was believed to in stable condition this morning at River Region Medical Center. Because the teen’s identity was not released, his condition could not be confirmed.
Less than 30 hours after the shooting, deputies and firefighters were called back to the apartment complex, and Davis said the fire destroyed the building. No injuries were reported.
Davis said the fire is being investigated for the possibility of arson.
The shooting was under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol, a spokesman for which was not available this morning.
