Junk food, CD players hot for local thieves

Compact-disc players and junk food were stolen in three car burglaries reported in the city since Friday, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.

In the first theft, which was reported at 8:30 a.m. Friday, a Pioneer AM/FM CD player valued at $200 was stolen from a 1999 Ford Ranger parked in the 1200 block of Adams Street.  Thieves gained access to the car through a broken passenger-side window, Stewart said.  

In the second incident, reported at 7:03 a.m. Saturday, bags containing potato chips, Little Debbie snack cakes and beef jerky were stolen from a Frito Lay van parked outside the company’s office at 75 Centrex Drive. The items were valued at a combined $1,200, according to Stewart. The thieves got into the van through a broken passenger-side window, he said.

In the third, a Kentwood CD player valued at $200 was taken from a 1999 Buick Century parked in the 300 block of Warrenton Road.  Stewart said thieves entered the car through an unlocked door.

Ford pickup stolen from mall parking lot

A Ford pickup was reported stolen at 8:59 on Friday night from Pemberton Square mall’s parking lot at 3505 Pemberton Blvd. but recovered minutes later in Claiborne County, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.  

The 2004 Ford F-150, valued at $14,000, was burned on the inside when found at an undisclosed location by the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Dept., Stewart said.

City man charged with gun possession

A Vicksburg man was charged with possession of a stolen firearm after being pulled over by police on Sunday, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.  

Phillip Moore, 25, 1513 First North St., was in Issaquena County Jail without bond pending arraignment later today in Vicksburg Municipal Court.

A .357-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun that was reported stolen on Aug. 30, 2006, was found in Moore’s vehicle after he was stopped near Court Street and Baldwin Ferry Road, Stewart said. According to Stewart, Moore was pulled over because he matched the description of the alleged perpetrator of an assault reported to police earlier on Sunday.

He was determined not to be a suspect in the assault.

City man charged with 3rd shoplifting

A Vicksburg man is facing charges of third-offense shoplifting after being arrested and charged with stealing four Classic watches valued at $40 from a Washington Street business, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.

Gary Buckner, 59, 347 Adams St., is facing charges of third-offense shoplifting after allegedly taking the watches from a display case at Super 10, 1509 Washington St.  

He was arrested outside the store on Saturday afternoon, Stewart said.

Buckner is being held with $10,000 bond in Issaquena County jail pending arraignment later today in Vicksburg Municipal Court.
