Attorney general warns of phone scam targeting BancorpSouth customers

Scammers are targeting BancorpSouth customers across the state, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Victims have reported receiving calls on home phones or cell phones alerting them that there is a problem with their BancorpSouth card.

The caller usually leaves a request for the victim to call a number or visit a website and leave his or her 16-digit card number or other pertinent information that could allow scammers to empty the victim’s bank account or open new credit cards in the victim’s name, the AG’s office said.

Some victims are asked to text BancorpSouth account numbers to a phone number, or email them to any number of email addresses.

So far, the scam has not been reported in Warren County, law enforcement officials said.

“If there’s actually something wrong with your bank account, the bank will contact you directly and ask you to come in,” Vicksburg police Capt. Bobby Stewart said.

Most of the reported calls happened over Memorial Day weekend, the AG’s office said. BancorpSouth officials said they are working to close down websites and phone numbers connected to the scam.

Senior citizens or people with disabilities are particularly prone to falling victim to this scam, the AG’s office said.

Customers who think they might have fallen victim to the scam are asked to call the Mississippi Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-281-4418.
