After a two-year break, clay pigeons will be flying at the Tara Wildlife Refuge at Eagle Lake in July.

Vicksburg Catholic School will organize and host the July 28 skeet shoot to benefit VCS, said Patty Mekus, director of Development and Alumni Affairs.

“We’re still working on some of the details,” she said, “but fees are $100 per person and $600 for teams of six people. If someone is by themselves, we will assign them a team. Lunch will be served and door prizes will be awarded.

“We’re looking for about 80 volunteers to help us,” she said. “We’ll have three rounds, one at 8:30 a.m., one at 11:30 and one at 2:30 p.m. We’ll need about 25 volunteers for each round, plus people to help us set up and get ready.”

She said a name for the skeet shoot, which has been known as the Guns of Vicksburg, has not been determined.

Steven Tzotzolas, a shoot organizer and a National Sporting Clay Association member, said he approached school officials at VCS about holding the shoot, which previously was a fundraiser for the Old Court House.

“We averaged about 201 to 207 shooters during the shoots,” he said.

Mekus said she took the proposal to the Diocese of Jackson, which must approve fundraising plans.

“The diocese gave their approval, so we’re doing it this year,” she said.
