MADISON — The Warren Central Lady Vikes had their five-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night.

They didn’t lose their smiles.

Hailey Brohaugh scored two goals in the second half and Madison Central held WC to only three shots in a 4-0 victory. Despite the seemingly lopsided loss, WC coach Trey Banks said he was pleased with how his team responded to playing against one of the state’s perennial powers.

Goalkeeper McKenzie Page had 12 saves for the Lady Vikes (5-1).

“I’m not disappointed, because we fought all 80 minutes,” Banks said. “That’s a really good team. That’s the No. 2 team in the state of Mississippi. It showed tonight. But I’m really proud because the girls fought for 80 minutes. They put everything on the line. They didn’t give them shot after shot after shot. It’s just the teams like that, you can’t give them the shots we gave them. They take advantage of them. That was the difference.”

Madison Central (3-0) took the lead just two minutes into the game on a goal by Ross Black and never trailed again. Marion Crowder scored in the 21st minute to give the Lady Jags a 2-0 lead at halftime, then Brohaugh found the net in the 53rd and 79th minutes to ice it.

Banks said the two early goals were the result of a switch to a new defensive alignment. It was designed to limit the scoring chances for Crowder and Brohaugh, Madison Central’s top scorers, but instead led to a couple of defensive breakdowns.

“We came into the beginning of the game and tried something different because of our scouting report,” Banks said. “After that second goal, we went back to our normal formation and we saw more time on the ball, more passes, more movement on the ball. We had four or five chances on goal.”
