City floodwall to be marked

Last year’s new high water mark on the Mississippi River in Vicksburg will be painted atop the 1927 mark in a ceremony May 18, a day shy of the first anniversary of the river’s historic crest.

The city and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. at City Front, where the new mark will appear.

The river crested May 19, 2011, at 57.1 feet in Vicksburg, 14.1 feet above flood stage and nine-tenths of a foot above the 1927 flood. A line showing a 62-foot mark had small levees held in 1927 remains the highest line on the wall.
