Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield was in good condition today after undergoing hip replacement surgery at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, the city’s policy director, Marie Thompson, said.

Winfield said Monday the surgery was to correct a birth defect aggravated by playing football. He was a defensive back and linebacker at the University of Mississippi in the 1990s.

He would not say which hip was being replaced or how long he would be away from City Hall, but said he would not attend the Wednesday meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
