Brandon befuddles WC again

BRANDON — Warren Central’s week started stormy and ended gloomy.
Colby Williams and Trent Tucker both homered, and Brandon scored all of its runs in the first two innings en route to a 6-2 victory over the Vikings on Saturday afternoon.
It was Warren Central’s third consecutive loss in a week that also included two rainouts. In two of those losses, WC trailed by six runs or more.
The losing streak comes at a bad time for the Vikings (13-9). They have three division road games this week — Greenville-Weston on Tuesday, Clinton on Wednesday and Vicksburg on Thursday — that will determine their playoff seeding.
WC, Clinton and Vicksburg have already clinched the three playoff berths from Division 3-6A, but the order of finish will be determined by the outcome of this week’s games.
“I still think we’re playing hard. If you told me we’d lose three to win three, I’d take it any day of the week. The next three really define our season, so we’re going to have a great practice Monday and we’ll be ready to go,” WC coach Josh Abraham said.
The Vikings lost in extra innings against Brandon on Friday, but Saturday’s rematch was never close. Williams belted the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first inning over the right field wall, and the Bulldogs were off and running. They had three extra-base hits while batting around. Tyler Rachel and Tyler Cox had an RBI triple and double, respectively, and Austin Puckett delivered an RBI single to make it 4-0.
Turner’s two-run homer in the second inning stretched the lead to 6-0.
WC pitcher Devon Bell was shelled for six hits in the first two innings, but settled in nicely after that. He didn’t allow a run the rest of the way, and only one runner got past second base.
“I think he was a little up in the zone the first two innings, and he was throwing fastballs in fastball counts, which we had to to give ourselves a chance. Any time you’re throwing fastballs to a good fastball-hitting team, that’s what happens,” Abraham said. “But he grinded it out and found it, and figured it out in the later innings, and that’s what we care about.”
WC’s hitters weren’t able to pick up the slack. They hit into two inning-ending double plays and didn’t score until the sixth inning. Hunter Austin drove in two runs with a one-out single to cut the deficit to 6-2.
That was too little, too late. Brandon’s Elijah Parker got out of the inning without further damage to complete a strong six-inning start. He allowed just the two runs, struck out four and walked none. Bo Key finished up with a scoreless seventh.
Cameron Upton went 3-for-3 for Warren Central.
