Bond was set at $275,000 Friday for a Vicksburg man accused of firing 17 bullets into a Kings home, injuring a 4-year-old child, in a drive-by shooting Jan. 6, police said.
John Phillip Hart, 24, 1408 Sherman Ave., was being held in the Warren County Jail following his appearance in Vicksburg Municipal Court Friday morning. He is charged with aggravated assault, shooting into an occupied dwelling and 16 counts of attempted aggravated assault.
Hart was arrested early Thursday at 625 Hart Drive by Vicksburg Sgt. Troy Kimble, officer L.J. Peters and sheriff’s deputies, said police Chief Walter Armstrong. It was not clear who lives at the address where the arrest was made.
“It was an ongoing investigation and we were able to get enough information that led us to his whereabouts,” Armstrong said Friday afternoon.
Though Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest, which was advertised at police headquarters with flyers prominently posted on front windows, Armstrong said Hart’s location did not come from anonymous sources reporting to Crime Stoppers.
“But we believe others were involved (in the shooting) and we hope anyone with information will come forward, either by calling us or calling Crime Stoppers,” the chief added.
Hart is accused of shooting 17 times into 20 Water Well Road on Jan. 6. Seventeen people were living in the mobile home at the time, Armstrong said, and Hart is charged with attempted aggravated assault on each person inside the residence who was not injured.
Several bullets struck 4-year-old Arkeevian Warfield in the groin, knee and ankle as he was running through the home, toward his grandmother. Arkeevian Warfield underwent surgery at University Medical Center in Jackson and was released Jan. 9.
The house at 20 Water Well Road has been an “active residence” for reports of drug activity and domestic violence, Armstrong said in January. Police have responded to the residence more than 100 times since 1996.
Anyone with additional information on the case may call police at 601-636-2511 or Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers at 888-827-4637.
Information is also sought in a drive-by shooting Wednesday at 413 Ford Road. The drive-by is the third in Kings this year, Armstrong said.
