Flashes hold off Pirates late

It was all about the seniors on Senior Night.

Three St. Aloysius seniors — Elliott Bexley, Forrest Logue and Sage Lewis — came up huge when it mattered most to lead the Flashes (3-8) to a 21-20 win over Mount Olive Friday in the season finale for both teams.

Logue’s biggest contribution gave St. Al the win. After quarterback Zarrick Jenkins hit Cameron Tillman for a 69-yard touchdown with 1:45 remaining to cut St. Al’s lead to 21-20, Logue read the eyes of Jenkins on the two-point conversion and intercepted the pass. He also rushed for a score.

“I already knew the route, that little spread pattern, that they’d been running all night,” Logue said. “I just saw the guy rolling out to the flats, I saw his eyes and I broke on the ball. It meant a lot to me and all of the seniors and our team. They put their hearts on the line tonight.”

The Flashes recovered the onside kick and ran the clock.

Bexley rushed for 118 yards and one score on 24 carries and kicked an extra point. On defense, he recovered a fumble late in the fourth quarter that stymied a promising Mount Olive drive.

“That was the most exciting, best game I’ve been a part of,” Bexley said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better ending. I’m very proud of how we played and I’m speechless.”

Sage Lewis moved to fullback for some snaps, lead blocking for Bexley and rushing for St. Al’s first touchdown and finishing with 25 yards on five carries.

“It was a fun one for sure. When you look at it at the end, it was seniors making plays on Senior Night,” St. Al coach B.J. Smithhart said. “I feel really good for them. I’m glad to end on a high note.”

The biggest swing of the game came from punter Blake Hudson in the second quarter and the game tied 7-all. On fourth down, the snap sailed over his head and Hudson picked it up at the 1-yard line, getting off a 35-yard punt on the run while being dragged down. The Pirates were whistled for a 15-yard roughing the kicker penalty and St. Al cashed in 12 plays later as Bexley found paydirt with 3:34 remaining in the half to give the Flashes a 14-7 lead after Hudson’s PAT.

“As soon as it (the snap) went over my head, I looked over my shoulder to see if they were coming and I knew I had to get it off,” Hudson said. “I just picked it up and tried to get it up as quick as I could, as far as I could. I just figured punting is just switching field position, getting the best field position for your defense, but it turned it completely around, got us back on offense and led to some points.”

On the next Mount Olive drive, Jenkins hit Zaneil Chatman for a 23-yard pass play down to the St. Al 5. But on fourth down and with time winding down in the first half, St. Al’s defense stoned Mount Olive on four straight plays to keep the advantage.

St. Al added to its advantage on the first possession of the second half. St. Al marched methodically 65 yards in 12 plays and gobbled up eight minutes in the process, capped by Logue’s 6-yard TD run to put the Flashes up 21-7 after Hudson’s kick.

Mount Olive crawled back within a touchdown on their next drive, as Jenkins capped a 15-play, 80-yard drive with a 6-yard run. The TD cut the lead to 21-14 with 7:54 remaining.

Hinds AHS 55, Resurrection 13

DeAndre Selmon rushed for 180 yards and four touchdowns, while Derius West added 155 yards and three more scores to pace Hinds AHS (6-5, 4-5 Region 4-1A) to a romp over Resurrection.

“We finished the year with a bang,” Hinds AHS coach Michael Fields said. “I hope we set the tone for next year and I’m very proud of them.”
