Lots of garden events planned for the fall

Mark your calendar now for a host of fall gardening events and programs.

Here are several upcoming events to remember:

First Tuesday Gardening Series — Sept. 4, noon to 1 p.m. at the Warren County Extension Office, 1100 Grove St.

Donna Beliech, horticulturist with the MSU Extension Service, will be talking about herbs. Admission is free.

Hummingbird Migration Celebration — Sept. 7-9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, 285 Plains Road, Holly Springs.

Activities include bird-banding, guided wagon rides and nature walks through the 2,600-acre nature sanctuary, a native plant sale, live animal shows, kid’s nature tent, vendors, crafts and presentations by experts on conservation, ecology and sustainability.

Special guest speakers include Dr. David Unger and Dr. David Pitts with talks on hummers, bluebirds and chickadees; Doug Tallamy, native plant specialist and author of “Bringing Nature Home”; Rob Miles, organization for Bat Conservation; and Terry Vanderventer, snake expert.

This is a true sustainable event, so no bags will be available at vendor stands. Guests are asked to bring their own bags and sturdy reusable water bottles. Most vendors do not accept credit cards.

14th Annual Haynesville Celebration of Butterflies — Sept. 15, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Clairborne Parish Fairgrounds, Haynesville Louisiana.

The event will include speakers, exhibits, crafts, food, books, music and entertainment.

Speakers include Fielder Rushing, writer, radio and TV personality; Charles Allen, Ph.D, professor and botanist at the University of Louisiana at Monroe; and Master Gardener and conservationist Joe Baucum whose garden is a monarch butterfly way station.

Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children ages 6 to 18 and free for children under 6.

A concert featuring country, bluegrass and gospel music begins after 6:30 p.m.

3rd Annual Mississippi Gourd Festival — Sept. 15, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sept. 16, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Smith County Agriculture Complex, 77 Oilfield Road, Raleigh.

The event will feature vendors with crafted and ready to craft gourds, tools, supplies, demonstrations, raffle, door prizes, music, food and classes in an indoor, air-conditioned complex. Early bird classes begin Friday.

First Tuesday Gardening Series — Oct. 2, noon to 1 p.m. at the Warren County Extension Office, 1100 Grove St.

Fall Flower and Garden Fest — Oct. 5-6, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Truck Crops Experiment Station, Crystal Springs.

The theme for 2012 is Recycling – Make Mississippi Green. The event will include speakers, educational exhibits, display gardens including a shade garden created by Warren County Master Gardeners, test gardens featuring new introductions of vegetables and ornamental plants and lots of food and plant vendors.

Let’s Go Mississippi will host a one-mile fun walk Oct. 5 at 9:30 a.m.

If you have never attended this free event, you have missed one of the best opportunities to see and learn more about plants that will do well in your home gardens. More than 6,000 folks attended last year.

24th Annual Southern Garden Symposium —

Oct. 12-13, St. Francisville, La.

Speakers include J. Dean Norton of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, floral designer Lynette McDougald from Mississippi State and Heidi Shiesley of Treeseach Farms in Houston, Texas.

57th Edward C. Martin Jr. Landscape Design Symposium —

Oct. 17, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Bost Extension Auditorium, Mississippi State University.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Landscape Architecture at MSU and the Garden Clubs of Mississippi Inc. Speakers include C. Colston Burrell, international garden designer, award-winning author and photographer who will discuss design and plants for shaded gardens; Edward C. Martin Jr., landscape architecture professor emeritus at MSU with a short film titled “Olmstead’s Biltmore Estate, Sustainable Landscape Designs For All Seasons,” which his son Curtis developed for a recent landscape architecture conference; and Thomas H. Eaves, from Hattiesburg, showing slides of his award-winning residential landscapes.
