Warren Central’s lone senior got one final moment in the spotlight, and her teammates one last chance to laugh it up.

Now, the hard part begins — waiting to see if they can maintain their tenuous grip on a playoff berth.

Senior shortstop Alexis Patterson belted a three-run home run, Katie Channell added an RBI double, and the Lady Vikes hammered Germantown 15-0 on Tuesday.

For now, Warren Central is in third place in Region 2-6A and is tentatively scheduled to begin the playoffs Monday afternoon at Grenada. That could change, however, if Vicksburg beats Madison Central today. That would catapult the Missy Gators into third place and keep WC out of the playoffs.

Vicksburg and Madison Central play at Madison at 5 p.m.

Both WC and Vicksburg must also make up a pair of rainouts against Greenville-Weston before the regular season ends Friday. WC plays a doubleheader at Greenville today at 3:30, while Vicksburg will host a doubleheader with the Honey Bees on Thursday at 4 p.m.

“It is a little frustrating, knowing we went into a slump in the middle of the season and haven’t really come out of it. Just to know we’re capable of so much more is frustrating,” WC coach Dana McGivney said. She added with a laugh and a nod to her short hair, “It makes you want to pull your hair out.”

Playoff implications were far from the Lady Vikes’ minds during Tuesday’s non-district game against Germantown. The Lady Mavericks have only won once this season, and struggled again in their second meeting of the year with Warren Central (13-10).

WC drew seven walks in the first inning — and 14 in the game — and jumped out to a 6-0 lead. An RBI single by Lawren Boolos in the second inning made it 7-0, then Patterson turned on an inside pitch and blasted it over the left field wall for her ninth home run of the season.

Patterson finished the game 2-for-3. She popped out in the first inning and lined an RBI single into the left field corner in the third. There were two runners on base for Patterson’s single, and she could’ve easily stretched it into a double. McGivney halted the runners to keep from running up the score, however. Patterson, who was halfway to second base, had to hustle back to first and settle for the single.

“People were saying, ‘hit a home run,’ and it got me nervous. Then, the second time, I didn’t try,” Patterson said.

Darby Gain and Brooke Patterson each had an RBI single for Warren Central.

Raven Thompson and Joinay Watts both singled for Germantown (1-20), which was outscored 41-0 in two games with WC this season.
