Suspect arrested in Vicksburg awaiting return to California

A man arrested in Vicksburg Wednesday who is a suspect in a California botched robbery is expected to face a murder charge there, though he did not pull the trigger.

Michael Porter, 20, of Hayward, Calif., was arrested at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at his grandmother’s home at 503 Fairground St., on a warrant for parole violation, police Capt. Bobby Stewart said.

California law allows for suspects to be charged with first-degree murder if anyone is killed during the commission of a crime, and Porter could face the same charges, San Ramon, Calif., police Sgt. Cary Goldberg said.

If convicted of murder, Porter faces life in prison.

Mississippi statutes allow a capital murder charge if a death occurs in the commission of a felony, but does not usually apply when an accomplice is killed.

As Gold N Treasures jewelry store in San Ramon was closing on May 30, four men rushed inside and attempted to rob 61-year-old employee Everett Parvin.

Parvin shot and killed suspected robber Kibrom Bairu, 18, Goldberg said.

Two other suspects — Gregory Jamal Lewis and Krishneel Prasad — have been arrested and charged with murder and three counts of armed robbery, Goldberg said.

“We have evidence under the Provocative Act Doctrine,” Goldberg said.

In Vicksburg Municipal Court Wednesday, Porter waived extradition to California, and investigators from that state were expected to be in the city today to interview him.

He had been on the lam since the day of the robbery, Goldberg said.

When Porter was arrested Wednesday morning, he was in possession of a 9mm pistol, but might not face Vicksburg charges for weapons possession, Stewart said.

“The charges are on hold until we find out what happens to his case there,” Stewart said.

San Ramon is a city of about 80,000 people about 25 miles east of San Francisco.
