Fall Vicksburg Farmers’ Market will start, end later on Saturdays

The Vicksburg Farmers’ Market will open and close later each week beginning Saturday, the Vicksburg Main Street Board of Directors learned Thursday.

“The request was made by the vendors,” coordinator Kristen Meehan said as she reported the hours will be 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Previously, hours were 8 a.m. to noon.

“The vendors were concerned with the cooler temperatures in the early morning,” she said. “They felt starting later would be a bit warmer, and thought it would be good to make a day of it. Also, people are doing other things early in the morning, we might attract more people.”

The fall Farmers’ Market opened Oct. 6 and runs every Saturday through Nov. 24 at Washington and Jackson streets.

Meehan said the market has averaged four vendors each week, but seven are expected this weekend.

Vendors interested in participating should call the Main Street office at 601-634-4527 on the Wednesday before the market, she said. Booth fees are $15 for agriculture and $25 for arts and crafts per weekend. Information also is available online at vicksburgfarmersmarket.org.

Begun in June 2008, the Farmers’ Market has been a regular summer event downtown, operating every Wednesday and Saturday during the summer.

Main Street in October 2011 received a $47,823 U.S. Department of Agriculture Farmers’ Market Promotion Grant, which provided money for a marketing manager and assistant manager who are employed as private contractors.

Meehan said the Main Street Board of Directors decided to hold a fall market because of the response to the summer market.
