Talbot Buys pitched well for Porters Chapel Academy on Tuesday. So well, in fact, that he just kept on pitching until the day was done.

Buys pitched both ends of a doubleheader against Calvary Christian, allowing just one hit and striking out 18 batters in nine total innings as Porters Chapel earned a pair of mercy-rule shortened victories, 14-0 and 12-2.

Buys threw about 50 pitches in a four-inning no-hitter in game one, and 80 more in a five-inning one-hitter in game two. He struck out eight in the first game — when he threw his second run-rule shortened no-hitter of the season — and 10 in the second.

Buys also helped his cause with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored in the second game.

PCA coach Wade Patrick said Buys cruised through most of his effort with fastballs, and wasn’t worried about overtaxing his ace. Buys also threw about 130 pitches against Russell Christian last week.

“We had to let him get a little deeper. We weren’t expecting that many pitches, but it was a good number,” Patrick said. “It was an easy 130. There’s a difference between that and a hard 85. He wasn’t in any trouble.”

Jonah Masterson had three hits and Sam Staggs had two in the first game. In the nightcap, Staggs drove in three runs, Tate Chapman had two RBIs and Sam Kirk scored three runs as the Eagles (9-4, 9-1 District 5-A) inched closer to a playoff berth.

PCA, Newton Academy and Russell Christian are in a three-way race for two playoff spots in the district. Newton beat Russell on Tuesday to remain undefeated, and Russell took its second loss. PCA can clinch a playoff berth with another Newton victory and a split of its two games against Newton next week.

If Russell beats Newton on Thursday, PCA would need to sweep Newton to assure itself of its 14th consecutive trip to the postseason.

PCA’s two games with Newton are makeup games from a pair of rainouts in March. Patrick said they have not yet been rescheduled, but will likely be played as a doubleheader next week.
