All suspects in Claiborne shooting released

All five of the men arrested and held for days in the shooting Nov. 17 of a Lorman man have been released, but Claiborne County Sheriff Marvin Lucas still believes one of them is the killer.

“We’re just trying to figure out which one it was, but there’s no doubt we had the person that did the shooting in jail,” he said. “You have to have the evidence to be able to charge them.”

Under Mississippi law, a potential suspect may be jailed for 72 hours before being released.

Ivory Anderson, 38, died in the early morning hours of Nov. 17 after he was shot outside Henry Lee’s Place on Bessie Weathers Road west of Port Gibson.

Anderson apparently was caught in a crossfire among at least four men, Lucas said. The sheriff said he believes Anderson was trying to get to his Chevrolet Camaro when he was struck once in the right side of his torso.

Another man, James Evans, 38, 2067 Johnson Road, Hermanville, was wounded and was treated and released from Claiborne County Hospital.

Lucas estimates 20 to 30 people were at the club when the shooting began.

“There’s a couple more people I’m trying to round up,” Lucas said. “I haven’t had anyone step forward and say they were an eye-witness. I’ve heard different people tell me they said they heard the shots, but I know someone saw something.”

Coroner J.W. Mallett said he is still awaiting autopsy results from the state crime lab in Jackson to confirm which gun killed Anderson.

Since the shooting, two Claiborne deputies, including the chief investigator, have resigned. Lucas would not give details of the resignations but said they were not related to Anderson’s killing.

The department now has 10 deputies.
