One garbage hauler in county the prudent path

By August, if the Warren County Board of Supervisors lives up to its Tuesday pledge, garbage collection outside the city will be handled by one hauler. And it’s about time.
The board is expected to pass a request to take proposals on a one-hauler system. Supervisors said moving to a competitive bidding process and streamlining all county garbage collections will save residents between $8 and $11 per month.
As it is now, about 6,500 people in nonmunicipal Warren County have garbage picked up by three permitted family-run operations and three corporate haulers. Waste Management, which has the contract to collect garbage inside Vicksburg, is the largest hauler with about 4,800 customers in the county.
Waste Management told supervisors it would charge between $14 and $16 per month, compared to the $22 to $27 it charges to some county customers now. Other proposals should offer similar savings. Every dollar saved helps.
Pass this request. Take in bids. Make a decision that is in the best interest of the taxpayers of Warren County. Choose the best bang for the taxpayers’ buck.
It’s taken long enough already.
It’s the right thing to do and the right time to do it.
