At least five Warren Central High School students were taken to detention facilities Monday after a fight broke out at the Mississippi 27 campus, authorities said.
Two 18-year-olds were taken to the Warren County Jail and three younger students were taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. Each was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
In a statement, Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Swinford said “about six students were taken to off-campus detention facilities” after an unspecified issue arose between the students off-campus last weekend. Accounts of the number of students involved varied, she said. No injuries were reported, she said.
Sheriff Martin Pace said deputies were called Monday morning to deliver the five to the detention facilities.
“We have programs put in place to reduce and eliminate these kinds of disturbances on campus,” Swinford said. “But if we don’t know about what is going on outside of school hours and off school property, we can’t implement those measures. ”
The school district has ceded the investigation to local authorities and Warren County Youth Court in the matter, Swinford said.
WC principal Jamie Creel said this morning, “My main thing is getting it resolved when these things happen.”
He said the altercation, which he termed “an argument,” occurred outside the school buildings on the campus attended by students in the ninth through 12th grades.
Vicksburg Warren School District resource officer DeWayne Sims, who called the sheriff’s office Monday after the fight, said this morning that it “is out of my scope” to release information about the fight or the arrests.
