Monsignor Joseph A. Koury

MADISON — Monsignor Joseph A. Koury died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison. He was 89.
Monsignor Koury was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Natchez to Albert Joseph Koury and Eugenia Germani Koury. His family moved to Leland in 1936.
He attended St. Joseph Seminary in Covington, La., and graduated in 1950 from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was ordained a Catholic priest in May 1950.
He served as a Roman Catholic priest for 62 years throughout Mississippi, including St. Paul Catholic of Vicksburg and at Biloxi, Yazoo City, Starkville, Oxford, Clarksdale, Brookhaven, Meridian, West Point, Eupora, Batesville, Sardis and Clinton. He also served as an assistant superintendent of Catholic schools and diocesan director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Catholic Youth, Family Life and Vocations. He held numerous other offices within the diocese and served on various boards.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Michael A. Koury.
Survivors include a brother, Peter A. Koury, and nieces and nephews.
Services were at 10 a.m. today at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Jackson. Burial will be at 3 today at Leland Cemetery.
