Sentencing has been delayed for a Vicksburg man convicted of a fatal robbery at Confederate Ridge Apartments.
Corey Thompson, 26, 4880 U.S. 80, faces up to life in prison for a May 1 robbery that left his accomplice dead.
Defense Attorney Ottowa Carter Jr. asked presiding Circuit Court Judge M. James Chaney to reschedule the sentencing so a doctor could determine Thompson’s life expectancy.
Chaney allowed the request, and sentencing is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday.
During the robbery, Thompson was shot in the stomach and lost a portion of his intestines. Because of his injuries, Thompson’s life expectancy is much shorter than those typically shown on actuary tables used for sentencing, Carter argued.
Actuary charts typically used by the court should suffice for Thompson’s sentencing, District Attorney Ricky Smith argued.
“The state’s position is that sentencing should be based on general tables, not a specific person’s life expectancy, but that determination is up to the court,” Smith said.
Thompson was convicted of two counts of armed robbery March 29. During the May 1 robbery, 19-year-old Maurice Morris was shot and killed
