Earth Friends Environmental Services has pulled its garbage trucks out of Warren County, officials said Monday, leaving three haulers for garbage service outside Vicksburg.
The Fayette-based company cited “economic reasons” in a resignation letter submitted by the firm in recent days, environmental officer Katie Strong told Warren County Board of Supervisors Monday.
Earth Friends served about 400 customers in north Warren County, including much of the Eagle Lake community. That base of residents and business owners must contract with one of the three remaining haulers, Waste Management, Waste Pro of Mississippi or Oscar Mayfield.
On Monday, the board renewed Mayfield’s permit to haul garbage in nonmunicipal Warren County.
Outside Vicksburg, residents and businesses must contract for their own garbage pickup. A $1.25 surcharge added to the approximately 6,200 such customers funds the county’s environmental office, a function of an environmental clerk and the building permit field officer. The office tracks the number of paying customers to satisfy disposal laws enforced by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. Garbage may be taken to commercial receptacles, with permission from the owner.
Permits reviewed twice yearly ask haulers to use properly marked packer trucks and have updated customer lists.
The three active providers is the smallest list of permitted haulers in the county in decades. In July, the board stripped Billy Drake of a permit for incomplete customer lists and late surcharge payments. Drake has appealed the decision in circuit court.
