Mayor Paul Winfield made it through a rough night at a Jackson hospital where he had surgery Tuesday, but he was doing fine this morning, said his mother, Linda Winfield.

Winfield is recovering from hip replacement surgery at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. He was at physical therapy this morning and not in his room, said his mother, who answered the phone in his hospital room.

Winfield underwent hip replacement surgery Tuesday to repair a birth defect that was aggravated by playing football. His mother said the family does not know when he will be released.
