Warren County’s track teams won’t be in contention for any team championships at next week’s MHSAA state meets, but they should have a chance at plenty of medals.
St. Aloysius won four events at the Class 1A South State meet Saturday, while Vicksburg High and Warren Central each advanced several athletes from the Class 6A North meet.
In all, 24 athletes from Warren County qualified for the state meet. The team championship at state is often decided by sheer numbers, however, and none of the county’s teams have enough to challenge those with larger rosters. Instead, they’ll compete for individual glory.
“We don’t have enough for a team title, but we definitely have a good chance to do well in the individual events,” St. Al girls coach Keiko Booth said.
St. Al’s Maggie Waites won the girls’ pole vault at South State with a season-best height of 11 feet, 2 inches and qualified for the Class 1A state meet in the 100 meters. Nicole Hayward also won the triple jump for St. Al.
Other qualifiers for the Lady Flashes were Alyssa Engel in the long jump, Tori Thomas in the shot put, and the 1,600 meter relay team of Hayward, Engel, Elizabeth Counts and Camille Bexley.
In the boys’ South State meet, St. Al’s Mack Davidson won the 800 and 1,600 meters. Luke Eckstein finished second in the 3,200, and Ken Cook finished fourth in the 1,600 to qualify for the state meet.
At the boys’ Class 6A North State meet in Starkville, Vicksburg’s Terrell Smith had mixed results. He won the 200 meters and finished second in the long jump, but was disqualified from the 100 meters because of a false start.
Smith, a sophomore, had run one of the fastest 100 meter times in the country earlier this season. He was the only runner in the North State field with a seed time under 11 seconds.
Vicksburg’s boys 1,600 meter relay team of Dannie Kimble, Dillard Reed, Devaunte Richardson and Dominique Foster finished fourth and will compete in the Class 6A state meet.
In the girls’ North State meet, Vicksburg’s Keiyana Gaskin won the 200 meters with a time of 25.17 seconds and finished third in the 100 meters. She was also part of the 800 meter relay team, along with DaJah Butler, TyMesha Nabors and Chantilly Hall that placed fourth to qualify for the state meet.
The Missy Gators also had two hurdlers qualify — Nabors in the 300 and Jasmine Washington in the 100.
Warren Central did not win any events at the North State meet, but did have five athletes qualify for the state meet — Khadijah Qualls (100 meter hurdles), Sherry Clark (300 hurdles), Taylor Willis (high jump), Candace Wilson (long jump) and Cretesha Kelly (triple jump).
The Class 1A, 3A and 5A state meets are Friday at Pearl High School, beginning at 11 a.m.
The Class 2A, 4A and 6A meets are Saturday at Pearl, beginning at 10 a.m.
