Redistricting maps will go public in March

A hearing planned for an unspecified date in March will allow the public to view two potential plans to redraw the city’s two aldermenic wards.

A date was not set so officials will have time to further review maps examined for the first time Wednesday with Vicksburg and Central Mississippi Planning and Development District officials at Mayor Paul Winfield’s office.

North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield, Winfield, city clerk Walter Osborne and city attorney Lee Thames met with the planners to study the maps.

Thames said the redistricting was required because the South Ward’s population increased by 1,882 people, according to the 2010 Census. He said city officials were required to shift about 900 people to the North Ward to bring the wards in line with federal election law requirements.

The proposals are labeled 2-20-12 and 2-17-12:

• 2-20-12 would extend the North Ward in the eastern end of the city south to take in East Clay and South Frontage Road areas, which include Porters Chapel Road, Carlton Place and Highlands subdivision.

The move would affect three voting precincts, the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union on North Frontage Road, Cedar Grove on Elizabeth Circle and Warren Central Junior High School on Baldwin Ferry Road.

• 2-17-20 would extend the North Ward south in the middle of the city — from the current Bowmar Avenue boundary to Polk Street and west to the Mississippi River.

Two precincts would be affected, No. 7 Fire Station on Washington Street and the American Legion Hall on Monroe Street.
