‘Insubordination’ gets teacher fired from VHS

Vicksburg High School teacher and coach Bethany Dykes has been fired for insubordination, her attorney said Monday.

Kevin Camp of Jackson, Dykes’ attorney, said Monday that Dykes, a first-year teacher, received the letter from the Vicksburg Warren School District announcing her dismissal on Friday. He did not know the details behind the charge because he had not seen the letter. He said she was reviewing her options on the firing.

Dr. Elizabeth Swinford, superintendent, would not discuss the reason for Dykes’ dismissal, citing school district policy, but added, “We found sufficient evidence to separate her from the district.”

Dykes, 24, a social studies teacher and assistant softball coach, had been placed on paid leave April 19 or 20 after claims of misconduct. She was reassigned to the district office pending an investigation by district officials, Swinford said Thursday.

The investigation was the result of rumors passed on to school district officials, Swinford said, not a complaint or call from a parent.

Camp said Dykes was cleared of the misconduct charge by the school district and Vicksburg police.

No complaint about Dykes had been filed with the school district by a parent, Swinford said Monday. Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said he was also unaware of any complaint that had been filed against the teacher.
