Old crossties, walkboards and bumper rails off the old U.S. 80 bridge will be put out for bid this month by the Vicksburg Bridge Commission.

In 2011, 1,500 new crossties and boards were installed by Kansas City Southern Railway on the 82-year-old railroad bridge. More than 200 crossties and 10,000 pounds of scrap metal were auctioned off by the commission to the highest bidder.

Another 1,650 items in storage are expected to garner bids between now and Dec. 12 when the five-member board meets, bridge superintendent Herman Smith said Wednesday. A deadline for sealed bids will be set once a legal ad runs, he said.

The list includes 876 10-foot crossties, 152 16-foot crossties, 337 10-foot walkboards, 130 10-foot walkboards, 116 10-foot bumper rails and 39 bumper rails that measure 10 feet or shorter.

The $660,712 in new rail equipment was one of two major improvements on the bridge last year and this year. A concrete retaining wall was completed in October to retain the Mississippi bank and allow storm water to drain over rocks below the superstructure — a $549,440 effort to slow movement under pier 2, the first large pier on the Mississippi side of the river.
