Another disappointing Sunday led to another lost weekend for Mississippi State.

Auburn scored seven of its eight runs with two outs, and Garrett Cooper and Justin Bryant drove in two runs apiece as the Tigers beat Mississippi State 8-2 in the series finale at Plainsman Park.

Mississippi State (18-11, 3-6) lost its third consecutive Southeastern Conference series, and fourth straight series overall. The last two weekends, the Bulldogs have lost the last two games of the series after winning the opener.

“We are not as locked in as we need to be to win series in this league,” Mississippi State coach John Cohen said. “Our pitching staff is pitching well enough to win some games. We made too many mistakes during the course of a game. We need to grow up in a hurry.”

The Bulldogs made three errors that led to three unearned runs for Auburn (17-11, 3-6), and just as many miscues on the base paths. Two MSU runners were picked off — both in the second inning — and another was thrown out while trying to advance on an errant throw.

Auburn then scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning after the Bulldogs botched a potential inning-ending double play. Auburn went on to get four hits and used two errors to take the lead and never looked back.

Creede Simpson drove in a run with a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning, then Dan Glevenyak delivered a two-run single in the fifth. Mississippi State had gotten two runs back in the top of the fifth, but never got closer than three runs. After the fifth inning, the Bulldogs only managed to get two men on base.

Daniel Koger (2-1) held the Bulldogs to two runs on six hits, over six innings. He struck out three and walked one. Slade Smith finished up with three scoreless innings for his third save of the season.

Kendall Graveman (2-1) took the loss for Mississippi State. He gave up seven runs — only four earned — in 42⁄3 innings, walked three and struck out two.
