A process has begun to find a buyer for the closed Grand Station Casino downtown.

Equity Partners CRB, a Maryland-based investment banking firm, has been retained by the casino’s parent company, by order of U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Jackson, according to a release issued Tuesday by the specialty banking firm.

A bankruptcy judge has ordered the accelerated sale of the casino’s assets, free and clear of all liabilities. A sale is set on or about Sept. 30, subject to court approval, the release said.

Hank Waida, managing director at EP, said the chance to market Grand Station is “an outstanding opportunity.”

The Mulberry Street casino, the only one on the Yazoo Diversion Canal, closed March 28 and 230 jobs were cut, a week before Delta Investments and Development filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection April 4.

“With direct access to an established hotel and the ability to market to exhibitors and attendees of all events being held at the city’s convention center and auditorium, the casino has multiple venues from which to draw its clientele,” Waida said in a statement.

The casino opened in 1993 as Harrah’s and was sold in 2003 to Columbia Sussex. In 2007, it was sold to Tropicana Entertainment. Delta acquired it from Tropicana for $3.25 million in cash plus liabilities, one of which is a lease with the city for 2.95 acres of City Front.

Terms called for the city to receive about $562,940 a year, plus 1.5 percent of net revenues through Oct. 13, 2033. The contract has been transferred through the casino’s various owners since it opened, though delinquencies on annual payments date to 2010 and total more than $100,000.

The release touted the casino’s state-of-the-art surveillance system, a 175-person banquet room, four bars, two elevators, room to support 850 gaming positions, a 250-space parking lot and walking distance to downtown.

EP has completed about 400 financial engagements in the U.S. since 1988, the release said.
